"Shouty" conversations, I believe, are a major problem of many people who talk on their mobile phones. They just couldn't seem to properly modulate their voices, unaware that they are already shouting when they're talking.
I suppose this problem can be easily solved by allowing the phone's speaker to include a feed from the microphone so the person talking knows how loud his or her voice already is. This could be easily done with a simple tweak on most smartphones.
If there's tunnel vision for pilots flying at supersonic speeds, there appears to be "tunnel hearing" for many mobile phone users. They're too caught up in their conversations that they don't mind annoying others with their awful voices.
I understand that some just don't realize it and that they don't really intend to be that bothersome. Hence, this tweak should be a great feature to include in new phones.

Amazing shortcut shirt folding technique
This one's quite old but I think it's worth reposting.
It's popularly known as the Japanese t-shirt folding technique and it's been on the Internet since 2006. I'm just a little disappointed that it only managed to attract some 4.3 million views on YouTube (the video with the highest number of views).
It's a very useful and fascinating technique. I can say it's the reason I started folding my clothes. I never liked folding or organizing my clothes but I somehow made some "improvement" by learning to to keep my pile of shirts looking neat with the help of this simple and convenient folding technique.
Learn how to do it by watching the video below.

Hate a website‽ Kick Ass and blast it away
There are websites you just love to hate. It could be due to the incessant ads, stupid or partial content, poor usability, or malicious presentations. There's the comment box to abuse when you want your two cents heard but sometimes, it does not suffice. Whatever it is in a web page that's bothering you, expressing all your accumulated disgust and repulsion can now be done more expressively with the help of Kick Ass.
Kick Ass is a browser bookmarklet designed to "destroy" websites. It is a game that allows Internet surfers to take a break and "wipe out" particularly annoying pages with the help of video game spaceships that fire blasters and bombs.
Of course, "destroying" here is only virtual. Kick Ass only creates a copy of the appearance of the website with all its elements converted into game items that can be blasted off. Playing Kick Ass can be addicting as it can be easily played by simply adding the bookmarklet (from the site) to the bookmarks bar on your browser. You only need to log in with your social networking account (or you can create an account at the site) and start playing with your cursor movement keys and space bar.

Guinea pig trivia
We welcomed a couple of fur balls into the family yesterday. They're guinea pigs, stout-bodied rodents many a student (who have Biology as their fave subject) would typically associate with laboratory experiments. They're too adorable for me to resist taking photos. Enjoy some of the snaps I got with some notes and trivia below.
Despite the name, guinea pigs did not originate from Guinea. Their origin is traced to Andes. |
Scientific findings suggest that Guinea pigs did not exist in the wild. They exist in their current form and behavior as a result of domestication. |
Some people, especially in Peru, use guinea pigs for healing. Guinea pigs may be used as talismans that are rubbed to the body of a sick person to address illnesses or to drive away evil spirits. |
The United States categorizes guinea pigs as exotic animals. An American or someone who resides in Uncle Sam's territory needs to obtain a license to raise them. |
The term "guinea pig" also means "test subjects" apparently due to the fact that these rodents are often used in laboratory tests. |
Guinea pigs love hopping or bouncing around when they feel happy or excited. |
Guinea pig teeth do not stop growing. If they live to be over a century old, they can end up having teeth longer than their bodies. |
Morning and evening: the perfect time to "play with" or enjoy the merry sight of guinea pig pets. These adorable creatures are most active at these times. |
These domesticated rodents usually conceive for a period of a little more than two months. They usually produce two to three pups. |
Unlike many other rodents, guinea pigs are not good in climbing. |

Sweet Potato
This summer introduced or reminded me a couple of things related to the sweet potato or camote.
First, this plant we locally call tinangkong is a flowering vine. It bears conspicuous flowers. Albeit rarely, it yields sympetalous purple flowers that look just like those of its semiaquatic cousin, the tangkong or kangkong.
I think I've seen blossoming sweet potatoes many times before but it somehow still feels peculiar finding our backyard sweet potato garden in bloom. The flowers just seem out of place that I almost always feel the urge of trying to locate any nearby kangkong that might have shacked up with our sweet potatoes. It's comparable to the feeling I get when I am reminded of this fact: the camote or sweet potato tubers we buy from the market is the very same thing that grows underneath our sweet potato garden.
Also this summer, I found a group of insects I think I haven't seen in my entire life yet. The insects look like a cross between a cricket and grasshopper (photo below). They fly but are unable to sustain long-distance flight. They don't look "friendly." Many of them have made our tinangkong garden their home, hanging around the stems and petioles and chewing on a good amount of leaves we humans are supposed to be the ones consuming.
I tried holding one of them. The six-legged arthropod didn't bite but it spurted what I believe was fecal matter. I am still trying to learn about the identity of this group of insects. I am likewise in the process of deciding whether or not I should exterminate them with some insecticide or just let them go away naturally (if they ever will). Being mindful of the possible ecological consequences, I am cautious of annihilating a bunch of insects I am not well acquainted with. Well...admittedly, superstition also factors in.

The hype of the supermoon
Admittedly, despite the seeming balderdash, the supermoon is an event worth observing. It's like one of those things in your childhood you would love remembering or doing again. The moon's color and fullness as it rises from the horizon provide a majestic view that can catch the attention of anyone. Moreover, the myths and lore surrounding the supermoon can likewise be intriguing.
One of the myths associated with a full moon (especially with an unusually bigger and brighter one) is the alleged ability of the moon to cause insanity. There are those who somewhat invoke science in explaining the myth by saying that the gravitational pull of the moon gets stronger as it comes nearer to Earth, hence causing cerebral abnormalities. Until now, no scientific study proves that the possible rise of the gravitational pull of the moon has any significant effect on Earth other than causing a higher high tide. Gravity does not factor in but insanity is possible to occur among those who ridiculously obsess with the belief that the moon is certain to bring forth sinister consequences.
Another myth involving the supermoon is the increased instances of disasters or calamitous events. Scientific facts readily dispel this myth so there shouldn't be any reason to change your plans simply because a supermoon is looming. Again, the increase of lunar gravitational pull on Earth is too low to cause earthquakes, more lightening, tsunamis, hailstorms, or tornadoes. A big bright full moon is just too beautiful to be linked with rising incidences of calamities.
Furthermore, the association of a full moon with the increased activities of supernatural beings or forces is something that can hardly be ignored. Up to this day, many still believe that there are sinister entities that become more powerful during a full moon—most especially during a supermoon. Needless saying, scientific thinking would lead anyone to easily dismiss such association. However, the undying claims and anecdotes of many people from different parts of the world perpetuate the question and doubts on whether or not there are supernatural beings who manifestly become more active in the presence of a big bright moon.
I am in the belief that the way news are presented about the supermoon diminishes the "prestige" of the event. Observing and savoring the moon's regal and inexplicable beauty is something personal to me so having too much said and insinuated about it smacks of being reductive.

Tips for Powerful Email Marketing
Email marketing may be a common and seemingly simple term but few know that not many succeed with it. It is a tricky task that may only be effective for knowledgeable marketers. How do you come up with a convincing email marketing campaign? What are email marketing’s tricks and secrets?
Listed and discussed below are some tips on how to come up with a powerful and compelling email marketing campaign.
Be ethical.
As much as possible, get the permission first of the person who will receive your emails. Similar to the way outbound telemarketing upsets prospective customers, unsolicited marketing emails is more likely to irk their recipients. Use an opt-in form and don’t just obtain email addresses to start with your bulk email sending campaigns.
Address recipients by name.
Nothing beats a warm salutation that includes your name. It creates a sense of connection. Of course the names should be spelled out properly with the right title or form of address (i.e.: never mistake Mr. for a lady or Ms. Is for a man). Surnames would suffice but as much as possible, use the full name if it can be obtained. Most of us would be indifferent to bulk emails as it treats us more like numbers than people.
Create a striking marketing copy that also clearly conveys your business identity.
Don’t be dull and boring. Any marketing campaign shouldn’t just stick to informing prospective customers. Your mails should grab attention and engage readers. Good layout and design are essential to stand out and reflect your business’ identity. If you would have to make use of videos or audio clips, make sure they are optimized and carefully chosen to keep your readers’ interest, not to annoy them. Moreover, readers shouldn’t struggle with going over the points and details of the emailed marketing material you send.
Go beyond mere selling and advertising.
Avoid being tagged as a spam or getting opted out by your subscribers. An uninterested recipient immediately hits the delete button. An annoyed recipient on the other hand goes for the spam tagging button. Purely commercial marketing emails are often ignored or worse, they can be tagged as spam – making it less likely for you to reach the same recipient again through email. Ascertain that you provide readers valuable information that can actually be useful for them. Don’t immediately start with a hard sell. Grab your reader’s attention first and establish a connection before occasionally pitching in your sales promotion intent. Interactivity elements within the page could also be useful.
Create a clear call to action
Beautifully designed and well-worded email marketing messages are nothing without a clear call to action. Make sure that you properly state or even imply in your content what you want your readers to do. Witty writing or funny anecdotal insertions in your marketing message could be a joy to read but without the proper message, it’s not even worth calling an email marketing message. Links to purchase your advertised products should be easily conspicuous and should come with the appropriate captions or labels. Put important links several times as deemed suitable.
Express with words not with exclamation points.
Avoid the heavy use of exclamation points in trying to grab your reader’s attention. Prefer witty, catchy words or phrases instead. Also, shun the $$$ sign overuse. If you have been long enough on the Internet, you probably have an idea how most email marketing campaigns abuse their use of the dollar sign. For many, the sight of $$$ signs on the email subject alone is indicative of email marketing and merits instant spam tagging.
Find the right timing to send those emails.
Avoid sending email marketing messages during holidays or during times when your potential readers are away from their computers. It is most favorable for your message to be read immediately as it arrives on the recipient’s inbox. Getting clumped up along with other emails will make it less likely for your email to be read. Moreover, it is recommended that you send newsletters or email marketing messages of vocational interest on Wednesdays or Thursdays. Newsletters and marketing messages focusing on leisure or spare time activities, on the other hand, can generally be more effective when delivered on Sundays.
Use the right instruments for email marketing
The general idea is that email marketing equates to bulk email sending. There are actually other modes of email marketing and they include newsletters, personalized mailings, public mailing lists, autoresponders, discussion lists, and individual replies to customer inquiries or requests. Making the most of all or most of these other options can yield better results. That means you can actually have opportunities for email marketing when a customer sends in inquiries, engages in forums/discussions, or signs up for company newsletters or mailing lists. Email marketing is not limited to the typically frowned upon bulk emails.
Launching a great email marketing campaign means effectively communicating with customers, current or prospective. It is important to create an impact together with a clear message. Poorly put up email marketing messages or campaigns are generally regarded as nuisances and practically end up getting labeled as spams. It is thus necessary to strike a balance between informing or convincing customers, aggressively promoting a business, and making sure your message doesn’t end up in the trash—or worse—the spam folder.

How to Reassure Your Online Customers
Promoting an online business that relies on online customers is nothing like doing it as a brick and mortar. While some scammers find luck preying on clueless Internet users, vigilance on the Internet has started gaining ground as more consumers tend to be more aware about the banes of transacting online. A well meaning business does not act like a scammer and should consider potential customers as educated persons who will stop at nothing to be safe with any online transaction gets himself into.
So how do you reassure your online customers?
Show how you value your customers’ security.
For starters, point your potential customers to your website’s privacy policy. Show them your credibly-worded “about us” page, real contact details, and even your website’s registration particulars. Overemphasize how you value online safety and honesty. The fact that you show concern for your customer’s online safety can have an effect of convincing a customer to trust and do a transaction with you. Remind customers about the risks of doing business online and point out how your business effectively addresses those risks.
Employ secure connection and third party security verification.
Obtaining third party security verification is important for businesses that make use of online payment facilities, employ online forms, or maintain online customer accounts. Don’t expect your customers to just enter their credit card details over an unsecure web form. Invest in https and secure connections on your website. Make sure your customers can have confidence in how his or her important personal data are carefully handed. Be responsible. You may not have intentions of harming your customers but online thieves do and they lurk in every corner of the web just waiting for the most opportune moments to attack.
Credible professional website design matters.
Get your business a professional looking website design not just for the aesthetics but to support your claim to credibility. Through this, you can distinguish your business from the squillions of scammers or frauds. Scammers typically don’t invest in websites the same way real businesses do.
Make good use of customer testimonials.
Ever wonder why almost every shopping website has a customer testimonials section? You are what or how your consumers think of you so getting your customers to say something positive about your business lends a solid endorsement. Established online shopping websites know how this works and some would even allow current and prospective customers to post comments on particular products.
Mind how search results make or break your online business.
It is typical for the cautious online buyer to exhaust all means to learn more about a certain online business. Google and other search engines offer a good basic way to learn about a particular online business’ reputation. Try to make sure that what comes out in the search results with your business name as a keyword is positive or something that will encourage doubting Thomases to try what you offer. You definitely wouldn’t want your company name or your website to appear with such words as “scam,” “fraud,” or “do not buy from this business.” Search engine results may not the best gauge of credibility for anything but they’re certainly one of the first few things customers turn to in obtaining more information about things online.
Convincing potential customers to visit your online business is already a tough battle—but making them spend on your online business requires greater effort. You don’t just want them as one-time buyers. Converting them into patrons, frequenters, clients, or return buyers should be one of your important goals. It’s just not possible to achieve that without first establishing customer reassurance.

TWITTER is...
Was playing with words and letters today.
Just realized that TWITTER, interpreted as a rebus, means CONTENT WRITING without CONNING
See:
CONTENT WRITING
CON N ING
TE T WRIT
TETWRIT is an anagram of TWITTER
☻ ☻ ☻
con (conning)
1. to learn; study; peruse or examine carefully.
2. to commit to memory.

Seeds
I have this good/bad habit of eating fruit seeds. I always thought if I get those non-digestible bits inside my tummy, I would tend to consume less since I would feel full earlier than expected. Just frowned to learn that many if not most fruit seeds tend to be toxic. A few seeds aren't a bother but taking in more than what the "normal" fruit eater would consume means some danger.
According to the American Medical Association's (AMA) Handbook of Poisonous and Injurous Plants, eating large amounts of apple seeds (and other seeds) can be fatal. The culprit: cyanogenic glycoside or cyanide. Some fruits known for seeds that contain cyanide include apples, cherries, apricots, nectarines, peaches, and plums.
I usually enjoy my seed swallowing binge with the lanzones, watermelon, apple, and citrus fruits. Haven't found reliable information regarding the lanzones (the seeds in particular) toxicity but it's hard to overlook the AMA handbook's "and other seeds" line.
I haven't encountered the following symptoms yet...
...so I'm quite sure I haven't accumulated enough poison inside my powerful gut yet. I have been warned, though.

Blue light can wake you up
Works for me.
Online articles once spread the news about blue light's properties that help reset the body clock and get the human body up from slumber. I was intrigued, more so with this article.
So I bought a blue LED lamp (well I decided to buy many of them later on since they were dirt cheap) from some Taiwanese shop some weeks ago and conducted the tests. So far, so good. I've successfully cut down my sleeping hours to a little over 4 hours daily. I no longer feel that tiredness in the mid-morning and afternoon.
Could also be psychological but as I remember it, since I set up that tiny (at 0.3 watt power consumption) blue light source on my desk, I've never felt more energetic and alert.

(Updated) PayPal Phils almost FULLY functional; now adds local bank account withdrawal service
I am a PinoyMoneyTalk.com fan and let me re-echo the GOOD NEWS I got from the blog. Filipino PayPal accounts can now withdraw funds to local bank accounts! Almost fully operational--the adding of funds using local banks is the only major feature left to await.
See more details at PinoyMoneyTalk.com now. I think this blog is the first to break the news about a fully operational PayPal Philippines.
Proof:

Xoom and WU, prepare to vanish! Beat these rates:
Withdrawal is...
Free
for 7,000.00 PHP or more
50.00 PHP
for 6,999.99 PHP or less
-------
UPDATES/Notes:
There seem to be delays in eon fund transfers recently, as reported by Paypal users from Luzon. See some details here.
Paypal does not charge direct-to-bank-account transfers (for withdrawals of P7000 or more) but banks do charge some amount for them.
Philippine banks don't seem to be so well-oriented with the new PayPal feature yet. Be cautious and stick to tried and tested procedures first and wait for the "dust to settle." Well, unless you intend to be the lab mouse.
Also, regularly visit PinoyMoneyTalk.com now for PayPal updates. The blog is a good resource -- perhaps the best. It also has forums and highly interactive comment sections per article. It's a gotw for Pinoys who are new to the PayPal system or online money in general.

Man in the dark
Maninthedark.com
It glides, wiggles, floats, dances, bends, and does a Kage Bunshin No Jutsu. It follows your mouse pointer. Hit a click and it grows a clone.
What you see above is an interactive animation from the website—the only thing in the website—Maninthedark.com. It's cool and fun but something baffles me. The website bearing the animation above has a Page Rank of 4 and an Alexa rank of 229,807. Also, the webmaster really spent some bucks to buy the domain and put on this "show." For what? I don't know. Contact the webmaster☻ You can find some notes about the site's owner by hitting the "control key" on your keyboards. Else, see this whois result for the website.
Well if you're bored, get a bit entertained visiting the site. I know it's somewhat shallow. I'm just amused by the interactive animation.
Caveat: That "cool" thing above seems so boring for browsers that they shut down after extended "playing."

Blogsvertise
I already had advertisements in mind when I started this blog. I wanted to write advertising articles -- to promote things I like. I know there are ways to monetize all this. Blogsvertise is one.
Their website writes:
Our Advertisers want YOU to mention and talk about their websites products and services in your blogs and journals. They want the publicity, the exposure, the Buzz! that online bloggers and internet journals can generate for their web site products and services. In exchange blogsvertise pays YOU in paypal per task/blog entry, for writing / talking about / mentioning their website in your blog!No scams. Not bad. I know of someone who's already making some money with Blogsvertise so I thought of giving it a try.
